Minecraft VPS hosting: run your own server on AMD Ryzen

A Minecraft VPS is a server you control end to end: install any version or modpack, run it 24/7, and let friends connect on your own dedicated IPv4 without touching a router. High-clock AMD Ryzen cores keep the server tick fast, so the world stays smooth as your group grows.

  • High-clock AMD Ryzen for steady TPS
  • Dedicated IPv4, no port forwarding
  • DDoS protection in every location

What is Minecraft VPS hosting?

Minecraft VPS hosting means running your own Minecraft server on a virtual private server you control, instead of a per-slot plan on a managed host. You get full root (Linux) or Administrator (Windows) access, any version or modpack you like, one dedicated IPv4 so players connect without port forwarding, and high-clock AMD Ryzen cores for a steady server tick. Your server is set up within minutes. For the broader hardware story see Gaming VPS, and for more titles the game server hub.

What a Minecraft VPS is good for, and what it is not

Why high-clock AMD Ryzen keeps your TPS up

Minecraft advances the whole world in one main loop, the server "tick", and most of that work runs on a single core. When a tick overruns 50 ms the server falls below 20 TPS and every player feels the lag, no matter how many cores the machine has. High-clock AMD Ryzen cores finish each tick sooner, and Gen4 NVMe SSD keeps chunk loading and world saves from stalling the loop. Extra cores help with a few background jobs, but single-thread speed is what holds TPS high on a busy survival or Paper server.

How to set up a Minecraft (Paper) server on Ubuntu

  1. Deploy the VPS and connect

Order a Ryzen VPS, choose Ubuntu 24.04, and you get the IP address and sign-in details in the console within minutes. Connect over SSH as root.

  2. Install Java (OpenJDK)

Run sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y openjdk-21-jre-headless. Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer need Java 21; older versions need Java 17.

  3. Download Paper

Create a folder such as /opt/minecraft, then download the Paper server jar for your game version from PaperMC and save it as server.jar.

  4. Accept the EULA

Start it once with java -jar server.jar; it stops and writes eula.txt. Set eula=true to accept Mojang's end-user license agreement (EULA).

  5. Edit server.properties

Set server-port=25565, max-players and difficulty, and keep online-mode=true so only genuine Minecraft accounts can join. Size memory to your tier with -Xms and -Xmx.

  6. Open port 25565

Allow TCP 25565 with sudo ufw allow 25565/tcp. Your dedicated IPv4 means players reach you directly, with no router port forwarding.

  7. Run it 24/7 as a service

Create a systemd unit so the server starts on boot and restarts if it crashes. On Windows, run it as a service or a Task Scheduler task instead.

  8. Connect from the game

In Minecraft open Multiplayer, Add Server, and enter your VPS IP. Port 25565 is the default, so the IP on its own is enough.

How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

Modpacks and large worlds drive memory far more than raw player count, so a heavily modded pack wants a bigger tier even for a small group. Never size below your pack's own minimum.

Shown in Dallas. Vanilla or light Paper for a handful of friends fits T2; a plugin server with a growing group is happiest on T3; modded packs and large worlds want T4 or more. Leave about 2 GB for the operating system and give the rest to the server with -Xmx.

Choose a location close to your players

Ping depends on distance, so pick the location nearest most of your players: Dallas or Houston for players across the US, New York for the East Coast, Los Angeles for the West Coast, Germany or the Netherlands for Europe, and Singapore for Asia and Oceania. See every option on the locations page.

DDoS protection for your Minecraft server

Minecraft servers are a frequent target for denial-of-service attacks, especially public ones. DDoS protection is included in every RyzenRDP location, so an attack aimed at your server's IP is filtered upstream before it reaches your VPS, and you keep your single dedicated IPv4 throughout. You still run your own firewall and allow-lists for who may connect.

Legitimate servers only

Install any legitimate version, mod loader or modpack, but keep online-mode=true and use only genuine Minecraft accounts: we do not allow cracked or offline-mode piracy servers. See the acceptable use policy.

Minecraft VPS hosting FAQ

How do I make a Minecraft server on a VPS?

Install Java, download Paper, accept the EULA, set server.properties, open port 25565 and run it as a service. The step-by-step is above, and the full tutorial also covers the Bedrock and Fabric paths.

How much RAM do I need for a Minecraft server?

A few friends on vanilla or Paper fit T2 (4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 80 GB Gen4 NVMe SSD); a plugin server wants T3; modded packs and large worlds want T4 (6 vCPU, 16 GB RAM and 250 GB Gen4 NVMe SSD) or higher. Leave about 2 GB for the operating system.

Do I need to forward ports for my Minecraft server?

No. Your VPS has its own dedicated IPv4, so players connect straight to it on port 25565 with no router port forwarding.

Should I run my Minecraft server on Linux or Windows?

Either works. Minecraft Java runs well on Ubuntu with OpenJDK and systemd, which is what the setup guide above uses; choose Windows if you want a desktop or Windows-only tools. You pick the operating system when you order.

Can I install any modpack or plugin?

Yes, any legitimate version, mod loader (Forge, Fabric, Paper) or modpack, with full root access. Keep online-mode on and use only genuine accounts; cracked or offline-mode piracy servers are not allowed.

Is my Minecraft server protected against DDoS attacks?

Yes. DDoS protection is included in every location, so attacks aimed at your server's IP are filtered upstream before they reach your VPS.

Can I move my Minecraft server off Oracle Cloud's free tier?

Yes, and many people do. Copy your world folder and server files across, install Java and Paper on the VPS, and point players at the new IP. A paid VPS avoids the idle shutdowns, ARM-only images and lack of support that come with a free tier.

Can I try a plan before I commit?

Yes. A 24-hour paid trial gives you a 4 GB Ryzen server for $4, with the $4 credited toward your first month if you keep it.
