Valheim dedicated server hosting and setup on a Ryzen VPS

A Valheim dedicated server keeps one shared world running around the clock, so your group can sail, build and fight the bosses whenever they log in, not only when the host is online. Run it on a high-clock AMD Ryzen VPS with full root, Gen4 NVMe SSD and its own dedicated IPv4 address, so players connect straight to the server with no home router to port-forward.

  • Gen4 NVMe SSD for world saves
  • Your own dedicated IPv4, no port forwarding

Valheim dedicated server hosting on a Ryzen VPS

A Valheim dedicated server on a RyzenRDP VPS runs the shared world 24/7 on high-clock AMD Ryzen cores, with full root access, Gen4 NVMe SSD for fast world saves and its own dedicated IPv4 address. You install the server with Valve's SteamCMD, open UDP 2456-2457, and up to ten players join from PC and Xbox. The smallest tier that fits is T2 (4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 80 GB Gen4 NVMe SSD).

Why AMD Ryzen suits a Valheim server

Valheim advances its world on a main loop that leans on one core at a time, so raw per-core clock speed matters more than a high core count. A processor built for high clock speeds, like AMD Ryzen, finishes each step of the simulation sooner, which keeps movement and combat smooth as the map fills with structures and tamed creatures. Gen4 NVMe SSD storage keeps world saves and terrain streaming from stalling the loop. If you want the general hardware story across every game, Gaming VPS covers it, and Ryzen VPS has the full specification.

How to set up a Valheim dedicated server on Linux with SteamCMD

  1. Deploy the VPS

Order a Ryzen VPS running Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12, connect over SSH as root, then create a normal user to own and run the server files.

  2. Install SteamCMD

Enable the multiverse repository and 32-bit packages, then apt install steamcmd. SteamCMD is Valve's tool for downloading and updating dedicated server files.

  3. Download the server

Run steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 896660 validate +quit to pull the Valheim dedicated server (Steam app 896660) into its own folder. The bundled start_server.sh already sets the Steam app id and library path for you.

  4. Name the world and set a password

In the start script set -name, -world and -port 2456, and a -password of at least five characters that is not contained in the server name. Use -public 1 to list it in the community browser or -public 0 to keep it private; add -crossplay for PC and Xbox players together.

  5. Open the ports

Allow UDP 2456 (gameplay) and UDP 2457 (the Steam query port) in the firewall. Players point their client at your dedicated IPv4 address and port 2456.

  6. Keep it running 24/7

Wrap the start script in a systemd service (systemctl enable --now valheim) so the world comes back after a crash or a reboot. Keep backups of the save folder at ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local.

  7. Connect

In Valheim choose Join Game → Join IP, enter your-ip:2456 and the server password. Everyone in your group joins the same way.

Updating later is one command: stop the service, re-run the app_update 896660 validate line to match the latest game patch, then start it again. Keep the server and the game client on the same version or players cannot connect.

Recommended tiers by world and group size

Shown in Dallas. A Valheim dedicated server needs at least 4 GB of memory, so the table starts at T2 (4 GB) for a small group on a fresh world. A full ten-player session with a large explored map is more comfortable on T3 (8 GB), and heavily modded worlds (BepInEx, large modpacks) want T4 (16 GB). Memory use grows as the world is explored, so size for where your world is heading, not where it starts. Every tier and price is on the pricing page.

Ports and connecting without port forwarding

A Valheim dedicated server listens on UDP 2456 for gameplay and UDP 2457 for the Steam query, so you open that two-port range and nothing else. Because every RyzenRDP VPS comes with its own dedicated IPv4 address, players connect straight to your-ip:2456: there is no home router to port-forward and no CGNAT in the way, which is the part that trips up most self-hosters on a home connection. Share the IP, port and password with your group and they join through Join Game → Join IP.

Pick a location close to your group

Ping depends on distance, so host near most of your players: Dallas or Houston are central for the US, Los Angeles suits the West Coast, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom cover Europe, and Singapore serves Asia and Oceania. See every option on the locations page. Network-level DDoS protection is included at every location, so a busy public world is less likely to be knocked offline.

Valheim dedicated server FAQ

How much RAM does a Valheim dedicated server need?

At least 4 GB. Start at T2 (4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 80 GB Gen4 NVMe SSD) for a small group on a fresh world, move to T3 (8 GB) for a full ten-player session or a large explored map, and choose T4 (16 GB) for heavily modded worlds. Memory use climbs as the world is explored, so leave headroom.

What ports does a Valheim server use?

UDP 2456 for gameplay and UDP 2457 for the Steam query. Open that range in the firewall. Because the VPS has its own dedicated IPv4 address, players connect straight to your-ip:2456 with no port forwarding.

How many players can join one server?

Up to ten players in a single Valheim session. The high-clock AMD Ryzen cores help the world stay responsive as that group builds, tames and sails across the map.

Can I run mods like BepInEx on the server?

Yes. You have full root access, so you can install BepInEx and server-side mods and keep them in sync with your players' clients. Modded worlds use more memory, so size up to T4 (16 GB) for large modpacks. Mod setup and tuning are yours to manage.

Is AMD Ryzen a good fit for Valheim?

Yes. Valheim's server runs its main simulation loop on one core at a time, so the high clock speed of AMD Ryzen matters more than a large core count, and Gen4 NVMe SSD keeps world saves quick.

How do I keep the server online and update it?

Run it as a systemd service so it restarts after a crash or reboot. To update after a game patch, stop the service, re-run the SteamCMD app_update 896660 validate command, and start it again, keeping the server and client on the same version.

Do you provide DDoS protection?

Yes. Network-level DDoS protection is included at every location, which helps keep a busy public world reachable. The VPS is unmanaged beyond that, so in-game moderation and allow-lists are yours to set.

Is Valheim still worth hosting?

Valheim still receives major content updates and has an active community, and your dedicated world stays online whether your group plays daily or returns together for each new update.
